Today's class centred around the summary of what we know about media literacy, and the incorporation of the collaborative site, cacoo.com. This task was an excellent prompt for creativity, and self expression. Each of the ten groups was given the same instruction throughout the class, yet each produced a very different final outcome.
After this exercise, we were then to create a Today's Top 10 list inspired by David Letterman (check out my favourite one here!) My list outlines what I believe to be the most important media and digital literacy skills for students to have to be effective 21st century learners.

10. Practicing social activity and responsibility

- Students should have the skills to actively participate in social activities both on and offline, and have the capabilities to do so in a responsible matter.
- As technology is constantly changing, students need to be able to cope with these changes and adapt in order to gain the necessary skills to continue to advance technologically.
- A wide comprehension of all forms of media is crucial to a student's success as they will receive information in countless ways, from text, to audio, to video. Strong abilities to utilize multiple forms of media will only benefit 21st century learners.
- Students should be able to understand that they view a particular text in a way that is unique from each of their peers due to their ranges of prior knowledge on a subject. Students need to be aware of the 'lens' they look through, and how that may effect the way they view information.
- With the vast amount of information available to students through technology, it will be crucial to their success that they can analyze where the information is coming from, and if they should trust what the source is providing. Which leads nicely into number 5...
- Students will need to be able to determine what information comes valid, credible sources, and what comes out of expression.
- Students are exposed to means of connectivism each day through means such as YouTube, or other social media sites. However, if students know how to use these means for effective and productive collaboration with their peers, they have the capability to re-imagine technology in a way that can be conducive to their learning.
- Students should be able to build upon their experiences and ideas in a way that allows for self expression through creation and end-products that they find to be meaningful.
- With the internet so readily accessible to students through means of computers, tablets and mobile phones, it is important that they be able to not seclude themselves from society, but to engage in it. A digital citizen is able to participate in society and in politics all through the use of the internet.
- I chose the ability to reflect as the number one on my list of skills for media and digital 21st century learners because I believe that all students of this age have the tools to be able to understand and to create unbelievable and comprehensive forms of digital media. However, I think that this ability to create must come from a place of purpose, and for great content to be achieved I feel learners should also be able to reflect on their choices and decisions to fully comprehend the significance of their work.
